Practicing a traditional form of art named for the ancient region of Mithila in the state of Bihar in eastern India, Santosh Kumar Das draws inspiration from Hindu mythology and iconography, incidents in recent Indian history and anecdotes from everyday life. Employing Mithila art’s unique Madhubani style and technique, he reinvents enduring themes while paving new ground.
Das attended art college at the MS University of Baroda, and was the first teacher at the Mithala Art Institute in the small town of Madubhani. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at the Asia Society in New York.
